Net = gross − withholding − employee payroll taxes − pre-tax deductions − post-tax deductions. Taxable wage rows describe tax bases and are not extra deductions.
Federal withholding uses IRS Worksheet 1A: annualize taxable wages, apply W-4 adjustments and the selected percentage schedule, subtract Step 3 credits, divide by pay periods, then add Step 4(c). Retirement deferrals do not reduce FICA wages.
Withholding versus annual tax
Withholding is an advance payment toward tax, not your final tax liability. A refund or amount due depends on your full return. Additional Medicare payroll withholding starts above $200,000 from this employer regardless of filing status; tax-return thresholds differ. Multiplying this paycheck by the number of periods is not a reliable annual net projection when wage caps are crossed.
Example and assumptions
A $60,000 salary gives $2,307.69 gross every two weeks before rounding and deductions. Prior year-to-date wages default to zero, so this represents a first paycheck. Enter actual prior wages to estimate a later paycheck. Changing pay frequency does not automatically convert per-paycheck deduction inputs.
Frequently asked questions
Are overtime and tips tax-free?
No. Qualified deductions may affect income-tax liability and W-4 elections; they do not automatically remove payroll taxes. Enter only the deduction determined on your completed W-4. This calculator excludes special tip reporting.
Will this exactly match my employer?
Not guaranteed. Payroll rounding, benefits, state exemptions and supplemental wages can differ. Unsupported scenarios suppress the result instead of showing an incomplete net paycheck.
