North Carolina Minimum Wage in 2026
The state standard rate is $7.25 per hour; worker and local exceptions can apply.
Effective 2009-07-24. Official sources checked October 26, 2026.
Coverage and exceptions
State minimum. Agricultural and domestic employees are subject to the relevant federal rules. Tip credits require notice and records; employers must cover any shortfall. The NC agency describes additional tip-pooling rules for businesses within its coverage; federal coverage and worker exemptions must be assessed separately.
Federal and state interaction
When both laws apply, the employee is entitled to the higher applicable minimum. Check industry, age and local rules before using the standard statewide figure. A tip credit does not remove the employer’s obligation to ensure wages and tips meet the applicable minimum.
Gross earnings example
At $7.25 × 40 hours × 52 paid weeks, annual gross earnings are $15,080 before tax. This assumes no overtime or unpaid leave.
