Overtime Calculator

Calculate regular pay, extra overtime earnings, and estimated weekly and annual gross pay.

Overtime Pay Calculator

Calculate regular and overtime pay separately, using your own overtime multiplier.

WEEKLY GROSS PAY
$950

Before taxes or deductions.

Regular earnings$800.00
Overtime earnings$150.00
Annual gross pay$49,400

Example: 40 regular hours at $20 plus 5 overtime hours at 1.5× = $950/week. Actual overtime eligibility varies by law and job classification.

Formula and worked example

Weekly gross = regular rate × regular hours + regular rate × overtime hours × overtime multiplier. At $20, 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at 1.5×, weekly gross is $950.

These are gross amounts. Tax withholding and deductions require a supported state paycheck calculator.

Overtime questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

For a simple hourly example, regular pay equals regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay equals overtime hours × regular hourly rate × the selected multiplier. At $20/hour, 40 regular hours plus 5 overtime hours at $30/hour gives $800 + $150 = $950 gross for the week. The legal regular rate may include other compensation that this simple model does not calculate.

What does time-and-a-half mean?

A 1.5× multiplier means an overtime hour is paid at one and a half times the regular hourly rate. At $20/hour the overtime rate is $30/hour. The $150 for five overtime hours includes their straight-time pay; the extra premium above five hours at $20 is $50.

When does the federal 1.5× rule apply?

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covered nonexempt employees generally receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. Exemptions and special arrangements exist; the calculator does not determine whether an employee is covered or exempt.

How is double time different?

Double time uses a 2× rate, so $20/hour becomes $40/hour. Federal FLSA overtime rules do not generally require double time; state rules, an employment agreement or employer policy may provide it in particular circumstances. Select 2× only when that assumption fits your situation.

Is overtime pay the same as after-tax pay?

No. This tool shows gross wages before income-tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare and benefits. Tax deductions for certain qualified overtime compensation do not automatically make all overtime wages exempt from payroll tax. Use a supported paycheck calculator for a separate withholding estimate.

Does working weekends automatically qualify for overtime?

Not under the general federal rule merely because the work is on a weekend or holiday. Hours worked in the workweek, worker coverage and applicable state or contractual rules matter. Enter the hours that actually qualify at your chosen multiplier rather than assuming every employee or shift qualifies.
