How Ohio paycheck taxes work

Ohio has a 2026 state marginal income tax rate of 2.75% over the taxable threshold. Ohio employer withholding tables changed for payrolls ending on or after August 1, 2026.

How it's calculated

Gross pay per paycheck = annual salary ÷ number of yearly pay periods. For example, $60,000 ÷ 26 = $2,307.69 biweekly before taxes. Federal withholding follows the standard 2026 IRS Publication 15-T annualized percentage schedule for a simple post-2020 W-4 scenario with the selected filing status and optional Step 3/4(c) amounts.

Estimated net pay = gross pay − estimated federal withholding − estimated state income tax − Social Security − Medicare − applicable other employee state contributions. Social Security is limited to the 2026 wage base ($184,500) using the year-to-date input; Additional Medicare withholding begins after $200,000 in employer wages. The projected state income tax uses 2026 ordinary-income bracket data as an annual approximation divided by pay periods.

Assumptions and limitations

2026 planning estimate — not exact payroll withholding. State income tax uses an annualized tax-liability approximation, not every employer withholding table, allowance or local tax. Do not use this as a substitute for your employer's pay stub. See the assumptions below.

Ohio cities and school districts may charge separate income taxes. This estimator uses annual state income brackets, not the date-specific Ohio employer withholding tables, and excludes local taxes.

Designed for a resident employee whose work is entirely in Ohio during 2026. The example excludes qualified pre-tax health premiums, 401(k) contributions, credits beyond simple standard assumptions, multiple jobs, nonresident rules, bonuses, special tax credits and all local taxes. Your W-4 and state withholding certificate may lead to a different actual paycheck. This tool does not determine your annual tax filing liability.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ohio charge state income tax on wages?

Yes. The 2026 state income-tax estimate is shown separately from federal taxes. Actual withholding depends on the applicable state payroll method and withholding elections.

Will this exactly match my Ohio pay stub?

No. This is a planning estimate, not an official state withholding calculation. City and school district taxes, employer benefits, year-to-date wages and other elections can change net pay.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly?

Biweekly usually means 26 paychecks per year. Semimonthly normally means 24 paychecks per year. Select the schedule used by your employer.
